On May 13, 1968, a citizen informed the University Division of a robbery in progress at a dress shop on Western Avenue. After requesting back up, Officer Oscar Joel Bryant rushed to the scene where he single-handedly confronted three suspects. Without warning, one of the suspects drew a concealed weapon and fired upon Officer Bryant. Although mortally wounded, Officer Bryant continued to exchange gunfire, prevented their escape and made their capture possible by responding officers.
This is our tribute and dedication to the life of Oscar Joel Bryant.
